CAIRO: Officials have met to map out a plan of action for a joint initiative to promote tourism and cultural heritage in Arab countries.

The Arab League on Wednesday held a special working group meeting to implement the program aimed at strengthening cooperation between nations in the region on tourism-related matters.

The get-together was chaired by the vice president of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH), Abdulrahman bin Isa Al-Jassas.

The initiative, already approved by senior Arab ministers, will look at ways to develop the tourism and culture sectors to boost economic growth, promote national heritage, and increase industry training and education. Marketing, legal matters, and the sustainability of historic sites were also discussed as part of the action plan.

Dr. Dina al-Zaher, the Arab League’s director of transport and tourism, said the scheme to integrate tourism and cultural heritage work across Arab countries was a key pillar toward preservation, investment and development of the sector.
