Eberard said in a press statement on Monday that "the Foreign Ministry of Mexico decided to grant asylum to Mr. Evo Morales on humanitarian grounds." He added: "We will immediately begin to inform the Bolivian Foreign Ministry that it must ensure the safe handling of Morales under international law." Eberard confirmed that he had received a phone call from Morales, during which he formally made an oral request to the Mexican side for asylum. He expressed the Mexican foreign concern about the safety and health of Morales, saying that his life and health are at risk, pointing to the Ministry called on the Bolivian Foreign Ministry to secure the movement of Morales. The Mexican foreign minister has already said that his country is ready to grant asylum to Morales on the territory of the Mexican Embassy in the Bolivian capital, La Paz, noting that about 20 former officials of the Morales government and Bolivian deputies are there.
