RIYADH: The Max Planck Society, one of the leading research organizations in Europe, is hosting the “Images of Science” exhibition at Alfaisal University, Riyadh, until March 31.
The exhibition by the German society was inaugurated by Alfaisal University President Dr. Mohammad Al-Hayaza and German Ambassador Jorg Ranau.
“The exhibition on display until the end of March is open to all visitors. It presents scientifically relevant but equally beautiful images of the current research of the Max Planck Society,” a German Embassy spokesperson told Arab News on Tuesday.
In their opening speeches, the Alfaisal University president and the German ambassador highlighted the thriving academic cooperation between the university and German cultural and educational institutions.
The most recent example is the arrival at Alfaisal University of DAAD-lecturer Tim Friedrich, who will teach German and serve as a focal point for all questions related to higher education in Germany.
The German ambassador praised the high standards of the university: “This university is the right place to showcase the ‘Images of Science’,” he said.
“The Images of Science is not only an art exhibition, and it is not a purely scientific presentation either. It is much more, (the images) are art created by nature itself,” the envoy said.
The Max-Planck Society encompasses more than 80 research institutes for sciences and humanities in Germany and abroad.
It is also involved in two flagship projects of Saudi-German research cooperation. It has partnered with Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and King Saud University (KSU) to set up an attosecond lab for research in physics at KSU. In a different domain, the Max-Planck-Institute for the Science of Human History is investigating the ancient oases in the northwest of Saudi Arabia together with Saudi archaeologists in the “Green Arabia Project.”
The Green Arabia project was started a few years ago by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage in cooperation with the Max Planck Society and the European Research Council. It won the Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Ansari Award for Serving the Kingdom’s Antiquities — for a pioneering non-Saudi group — at the 1st Saudi Archaeology Convention in 2017.

It examines environmental change in the Arabian desert over the past 1 million years. A multidisciplinary team of researchers is studying the effect of environmental change on early humans and animals that settled or passed through the desert and how their responses determined whether they survived or not.
As the exhibition is part of academic cooperation, the General Culture Authority (GCA) and the German Embassy partnered for a literature evening.
In 2018, they hosted a literature and music evening with German author Christoph Peters at Alfaisal University and the event brought together a diverse audience of Saudi students as well as literature and poetry enthusiasts.
The evening was one of the first events that marked the launch of a series of cultural events by the GCA.
